How to create a US iTunes account without a SA Credit Card

By Francdore  //  Stuff  //  45 Comments

Many of you might have noticed that after buying an iPad/iPhone and creating an iTunes account to access the Apple App Store that there are limited apps available and that you can’t even download the world famous Angry Birds games. WTF! For some reason they have blocked all those wonderful apps and games from us South Africans. Assholes!

People then started to Google this and found that if you’re in the US App Store, you can download Angry Birds for example and MANY other great apps which are not available in the South African App Store. People then tried to create a US Itunes account but when they put in their South African Credit Card details, they got a message saying your SA Credit Card is not valid. So they blocked your SA Credit card and they also check your address. So you can’t type in your South African address.

Now, there’s a loop hole for this and here’s what you do:

Open your iTunes and sign out of your SA account.

Scroll right to the bottom and click on the South African flag.

On the next screen you will have flags of many countries. Click on the American flag.
This will open the American iTunes store.

At the top click on App Store and then on the right of your screen there are these columns called paid apps, free apps etc. Under the block that says “Free apps”, click on the first free app in that list.

This will open a popup where you either need to sign in with your iTunes account or Create a new iTunes account. Click on create a new iTunes account. On the next screen click continue to create your iTunes account and then accept the terms and conditions.

If you used your main email address for your SA iTunes account, you will unfortunately need to use a different email address for this one. Then choose your password, enter a security question and answer, data of birth and click continue.

Now on the next screen choose “None” as your payment option otherwise they will pick up from your credit card details that you’re South African and send you back to the SA store. Next is where you go to Google Maps and search for a McDonald’s in Los Angeles or a Beverley Hills Hotel and use that address. You have to use an American address otherwise they’ll send you back to the SA store. Then click “Create Apple ID” and that’s it. Verify your email address by clicking on the link they sent you and you’re done.

Now here’s how you buy Apps from the US app store

You go to any of the following sites:

http://www.wildtwig.com/

https://ieverything.co.za/store/

http://www.maximuscards.com/

You will receive an iTunes voucher number and then go and redeem it inside the iTunes store.

And that’s it! Now you can download free apps and paid apps.

  • Don’t know if I’m doing something wrong, or if things have changed, but it looks as if you now have to supply credit card details.
    Any thoughts.

    • Hey. I’m not sure. I’ll have to check and get back to you. Are you sure you followed the exact steps and went to the American iTunes store?

    • Hi Chris. Did you get your account to work??

  • Help, trying to follow your advice on ipad 3 but when i open the itunes app just get a link to terms and conditions, not able to do anything else… Any advice?

  • Hi, I set-up my US account a week ago & it was working perfectly. Then I tried to set up another persons account this week & it is no longer working. My account has also been disabled as of today. Has anyone who has set-up their US account recently had their account disabled?

  • My account was disabled because they somehow figured out that I wasn’t living in the US & sent me a mail saying that I am not authorized to use US itunes. Pity as SA itunes have absolutely NOTHING worth downloading. Francdore, thanks for showing us how to set one up even if I only got 2 enjoy it for a week :-)

  • I may have a easier way to go about this if you live in SA and want all the cool apps in the US store but you want to use your credit card then switch to the kenya store because they accept the SA credit cards and they get access to all of the apps in the US the only downside is you still won’t get access to the movies and music the only thing this dose is give you access to all the cool apps that you would get in the US store and allow you to pay for them with your credit card instead of using a voucher.

    • I tried to sign up via Kenya iTunes, but it will not allow me to put our local 4 digit area code in, it wants a 5 digit code.

Has anyone had any luck? And why are us South African always getting screwed!!!!??? WE went through political sanctions before and it seems to be the same all over again.

  • So there is now no way to set up a US account from SA?

  • I still can’t register on he USA iTunes. It keep on asking for credit card detail even if I ask our head office address in west Chester. Can you help?

  • Hi Francdore, I followed your instructions and it took any 17mins for whole process, this is awesome, thank you

    Yols

  • set up my account in minutes!

    • How did you get your account to work. it doesnt give you the option to put “none” in the credit card details.

      • First step is to attempt to download a free app before creating a new account. This is the only way it will give you the “none” option.

  • Hi there. Followed all your instructions, and clicked on “none” under payment options. However, when I clicked on “Create Apple ID”, it says I must contact Apple Support. Have tried a few times, but it won’t work. Now what??!! Any suggestions?

    • Justine, you need to set it up using wifi preferably on your ipad/iphone etc. Often if you try set it up from your laptop it pics up a South African IP address. I have set up a few US itunes accounts on my iPad and it works every time.

  • i cant set up a us itunes account.i followed all the instructions but there is no “none” under payment options.

    • First step is to attempt to download a free app before creating a new account. This is the only way it will give you the “none” option.

  • Hey I am still struggling as everything I do the iTunes App says it can’t connect or won’t load or something. God! Please see if you can help me because I can’t do anything or download anything cool. I want angry birds so badly too!!!!!
    Mia

  • Works 100%. Thank you for the share. Really appreciated.

    Shaun

  • 100% working just as say, thank you much appreciated

  • It Works!!!!
But you have to sign out of your ID and then try and download something free. It will then ask to sign in or create new ID. Choose New and follow steps set out as above!

    Thanks

  • Out of interest, the reason SA has such a crappy selection of apps is more to do with the South African Film and Publications Board.

For some reason games fall under the same categorisation as film, and therefore need to be rated by the FPB before they can be available. The FPB charges something like R1,000 to have an item rated. So even though developers may be putting an app up for free, or for a measly 1 dollar or something, they’d have to take a R1,000 loss to start with. SA isn’t a big enough market for developers to jump through hoops to get things released here unfortunately, but it’s more the fault of SA’s outdated ratings systems.

  • Could get on to the US iTunes site, but when I complete all information it requests that I contact their IT support. What should I do?

    • It’s picking up that you’re located in South Africa so it’s selecting your application for review. Contacting Apple support won’t help you much.

A sure fire way to open the account with no issues would be to connect to a remote server in the US before starting (also known as a VPN).

You can get one here: http://www.strongvpn.com/packages_africa.shtml

The LITE VPN PPTP ACCOUNT is good.

  • what cell phone number must i use when using the us itunes ? please help me will be highly appreciated

    • Hi. I never typed in a cellphone number. I only typed in the landline number of the address I used. Isn’t that an optional field?

  • On Mac does it work the same.???Because it does not show the option (none) by payment option

  • SA iTunes sucks!!!

  • Thank u so much I followed your instructions more carefully and got it to work!!!!

  • What a load of bullshit! I followed every step as well as other steps from other people which are similar! But even with “none” payment it still says, contact ITunes support to finalize account. All details were from us and I spent dollars to buy a gift card?

    So what your excuse now?

  • For some reason I don’t have the “none” option. Don’t know if its just my iTunes? Or if Apple has become so greedy that they’ve taken it away?

  • Thanks, was able to download angry birds last night.
I couldn’t create a new ID on iTunes because, by default, you need credit card, but the process was simple when i created ID via Appstore (iPad)

  • Ive signed out of my SA account but it does not give me the option of selecting the American flag as no flags are at the bottom.

  • I tried all the steps specified above, did some changes, almost did everything which I thought was the problem… but i have always got to receive this prompt message “Contact Itunes Store support to complete transaction”. I contacted itunes support but to no avail. Any solutions to this? Thanks.

  • I just created my own US account and it works a treat, lets see if it lasts.

    Thanks for this tip!

  • When I try to create new ID all is fine till I need to chose payment method. It doesn’t give me the none option only the different credit card options. Where am I doing something wrong?

    • You have to access the US iTunes store, click on an app you want to download and when it asks you for your account info, then you register via that, for a new account.

It doesn’t give you the ‘none’ option if you go the other route.

  • Bless you! Worked perfectly!

  • Works perfect, Give the man a Bells

  • Hi Guys.

After creating a US account, must i buy a voucher before i can download free apps??

    • Hi Tiffany,

With an US iTunes account you can download free apps without any credit. Only when you want to buy an app, you will need to buy an iTunes voucher.

You can get the iTunes vouchers from a website called Wild Twig – http://www.wildtwig.com

      Francois

      • Thanks Francois, it is not giving me a none option when I’m at the billing info.
The only choices I have is providing card details, gift voucher or certificate?

If I were to buy a voucher, how do you buy? With a credit card?

        Is it safe.

        Your help is much appreciated:-)

  • Thank You!!! :)
